Permit Preparation & Kathmandu Sightseeing
You will be received by our team member at TIA. He will transfer you to the 3-star hotel at Thamel in a private vehicle. You can stroll on the road of Thamel in the evening. Next day our team will prepare a permit. At the same time, you can do a sightseeing tour of this fascinating city along with Hindu Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, and bustling Durbar Square. “Kathmandu is a place with more temples than houses, more gods and goddesses than people, and more festivals than the number of days in a year” - Sir Kirk Patrick, the first-ever Britisher to visit Nepal.
Fly & Drive
We will fly to Bhardrapur (45 minutes) and drive to Taplejung. On the way, we will have a tea garden tour at Kanyam, Ilam.
Next day we will have an off-road drive to Sekathum (4 hrs) from Taplejung.
Trek, Trek & Trek
From Sekathum our trek begins; we will be walking 5-6 hrs a day on average, gaining altitude of 500-700m per day.
We will walk along the Ghunsa Khola, crossing over many bridges, through forests, and several waterfalls. We might spot the Red Panda on the way to Gyabla from Amjilosa if we are lucky enough.
Passing through the wide range of flora and fauna of Phale will lead us to Ghunsa, the gateway to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp. Normally, trekkers stop at Ghunsa for acclimatization, but we have our acclimatization day at Khambachen.
Acclimatization & Rest Day
March to Pangpema
After acclimatization & rest day at Khambachen, we will move towards Lhonak, the last settlement with a few teahouses.
Leaving Lhonak, we will move toward the North Base Camp of Mt. Kanchenjunga, also known as Pangpema (5143m). We will be spending our night at the base camp.
Summit Day & Descend
Early morning we will ascend Dhromo Ri and descend to Pang Pema (850m). It takes around 4-5 hrs to ascend & 2 hrs to descend. We don’t need crampons and ice axes. We will catch a glimpse of mesmerizing Kanchenjunga along with Gimmi Gela, Nepal Peak, Kirat Chuli, and Dhromo Peak as the reward of multiple days of trekking and return to Lhonak for an overnight stay.
Finally, we will descend back to Ghunsa.
Rest Day at Ghunsa
Kanchenjunga South Base Camp
From Ghunsa, it will take two days to reach Tseram, crossing high passes. The major passes are (in order from Ghunsa to Tseram) Sele La (4480m), Mirgin La (4646m), and Sinelapche Bhanjyang (4750m). Sinelapche Bhanjyang is the highest with an elevation of 4750m, whereas Mirgin La provides the best view with Makalu on the horizon.
These passes will be a bit challenging, but they will offer jaw-dropping vistas of mountains. This is also an area where some trekkers report seeing snow leopards. Leaving our belongings behind at Tseram, we will move toward the viewpoint of the South Base Camp of Mt. Kanchenjunga, also known as Oktang (4730m).
We will catch a glimpse of mesmerizing Kanchenjunga with all its major peaks, along with Kabru, Rathong, and Koktang, and return to Tseram for an overnight stay. Then we will descend back to Yamphudin, walking 6.5-7.5 hrs a day.
Drive & Fly
We will drive from Yamphudin, Taplejung to Kanyam, Ilam. Our overnight stay will be at Kanyam to avoid the heat and mosquitoes of Bhadrapur, Jhapa.
The next day we will drive to Bhadrapur airport and fly back to Kathmandu. In the evening, we will have a farewell dinner.
