Timbung Pokhari Trek
Timbung Pokhari Trek
Trek Description
Timbung Pokhari, located at an altitude of 4350m on the border of Taplejung's Sidingwa Rural Municipality and Panchthar's Yangwarak Rural Municipality, holds deep religious and cultural significance. The name "Timbung Pokhari" comes from the Limbu word "Timbak," meaning gunfire, due to the pond's occasional sounds resembling gunshots. Pilgrims believe that offering puja here brings peace and happiness, though it is said that negative consequences may follow for visitors harboring sin, greed, or jealousy.
Pilgrims
Pilgrims visit Timbung Pokhari four times a year on specific dates: 15 Shravan (July 30), Nag Panchami (August 18), Janai Purnima (August 28), and Krishna Ashtami (September 4). Communities such as Brahmin, Kshetri, Rai, Limbu, Bhote from Taplejung, Panchthar, and Sikkim make annual pilgrimages here.
Religious Importance
Religious symbols from Hindu, Buddhist, and Kirant traditions mark the area. Hindu followers consider the pond an emblem of Lord Vishnu, while followers of nature-worshiping communities such as the Limbu and Rai honor Lord Shiva's presence here in Shravan. The Bhote community sees it as the sacred land where Lord Padmashree prays for world peace.
Flora and Fauna
The area boasts diverse biodiversity, with species like blue sheep, ghoral, snow leopard, bear, musk deer, red panda, and yaks. Herbal plants such as Kutki, Padamchal, Maikopila, and Yarsagumba grow here, adding to its status as a capital of herbs.
Climate
The region has a cold winter from November to February, mild summers, and heavy rain from June to October, with temperatures reaching approximately 20°C. The lake freezes for about 3-4 months, melting by February or early March. Best Time to Visit The ideal time to visit is from March to October, with mid-July to August offering unique cultural experiences in the area.
